Our History
What has come to be known as The Green Room Holiday Party had its genesis 54 years ago when two local "confirmed bachelors" (in fact, a very prosperous, compassionate and proactive gay couple), first hosted a Christmas Party for all their other "single" friends. The concept of the party was simple: to collect gifts and dollar donations from their friends who, for the most part, did not have children to benefit the children of San Francisco who were without parental support during the Holidays.
City Youth Now, founded in 1950 as The Volunteer Auxiliary of San Francisco's Youth Guidance Center, was chosen to receive and distribute the gifts from the party. The first nonprofit organization of its kind in the United States, City Youth Now provides enrichment services and programs to the children under the jurisdiction of the Court in San Francisco. These children include the abused, abandoned and neglected, as well as delinquent children ranging in age from newborn to 18 years.
Since that first party 54 years ago, the event has grown to become one of San Francisco's most anticipated holiday gatherings of the year!
